okay anyway so. i guess the thing that we have to start off with is that nimona truly threw him for a loop because he really just kind of thought of her as a destruction child for a while and was like “okay so i guess this is just the kind of people we’re dealing with here.” we had kind of talked about how their backstories are a little similar but it’s really funny because i don’t think they really saw eye to eye at all when they first met. nico had just gotten off of saving bob the titan and coming back from tartarus with will, not long after a war for home, and nimona was like “no, blow it all up” and he was still too shaken to really care. at the time, he only cared about getting home and keeping will safe.

god i actually am really curious if they would’ve hit the ground running as hard as they did if it hadn't been for a couple of things. i think even early on nico soon realized that nimona was someone who was so used to being on her own and only having herself to rely on and being mistreated for being who she is that he immediately kinda went "oh mood?" and really sort of just decided that he didn't want that for her lmao. NICO'S ENTIRE DEAL USUALLY REVOLVES AROUND PEOPLE WHO ARE MISTREATED OR FORGOTTEN AND GOING OUT OF HIS WAY TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT and i think nimona really pinged him extremely hard.
this thread from w0 saturday really kind of changed his perspective on her, too, because she actually said something that really solidified this which was "I care about myself. I'm the only thing that cares. I don't really have anybody back in my world to tell me to do those things." and hinted about what happened with ballister and he really kind of just went "you're mine now." i think even if she kept actively rejecting him he would have kept reaching out because he is from a canonpoint where he can recognize certain things and he knows what loneliness and anger and misguidance looks like.
he also knows exactly how it feels to be pressured into having to trust and engage with people and i think so much of how he approached her early on was framed in a sense of "what would work on me" and "what would i dislike" because he just decided on his own that they were the same. and they kept talking. and kept talking. and kept talking and really came to the conclusion how alike they were and how similar some of their experiences were. no yeah okay i'm looking at this and they really turboed in their w0 saturday thread im losing it that's fine anyway cool i love that for them. i think that + the combination of the jailbreak really helped because he also then viewed it as like "she's not actually as destructive as she wants people to think. she does care. she's just scared of showing people she cares because she's been so hurt before."
i think also very early they had a pretty good understanding of each other. they knew when to push and when not to push and were working on building up a trust between themselves. i think both of them had a similar response of being so, so happy when the other person trusted them because it was like "this is okay. i didn't mess this up. i don't know how to do this, but i desperately want to try for them." it was all major /tentative tailwagging energy for a while because nimona felt like she couldn’t always measure up to their adults and nico was never quite sure how to really make friends. that said i do think and qualify this as nimona is the first friend he’s managed to make on his own in ages because even will’s siblings are, well, will’s siblings. nimona is someone he managed to reach out to on his own and actually use his own experiences to relate to her and help her and understand her.
this thread from w2 thursday was also really important because it was post his second cyoa and it was really the first time i think he allowed himself to be vulnerable around her. up until that point, he tried really hard to stay cool and collected because he was in such the mindset that he had to be chill and not show his hand so he could help nimona and be there for her and let her feel her feelings because he was pretty sure nobody had ever really let her before which is a stupid hypocritical thing because he then ignored his own on and off for a while but it didn’t matter. i think this was about the point he really decided he could trust her with heavier things and even up until this he was scared she’d still bail. he knew she wasn’t always comfortable with more intense and heavier shows of emotion or serious things and he had worried she’d eventually decide she actually didn’t want to be close to him and he’d have to reassess their whole friendship. that did not happen. instead they got closer after that.
i’m genuinely trying to think of when he decided she was his best friend, it was definitely weeks before he ever actually said it to her? i think he always kind of knew that the person who knew him best out of everybody (kid-wise, not counting their two adults) was nimona. it really became a level of friendship where one of them could start a thought and the other would finish it. there was just so much he felt like she just understood but then it became a cycle of “OH NO” because nimona understanding these awful things meant she’d lived through awful things and he hated that, actually! i think he got really mad on her behalf a lot of times people were mean to her and “backslid” her progress of learning to care about herself and let other people care. he saw her memory during memshare and his initial thought really was just to stab other people for daring to make her feel less than wanted because, like, same. he really became a ballister anti during that week, but he did mean what he said about how he was proud of her for at least trying to stay and trying to believe they wouldn’t hurt her when it was hard to trust people.
i think it's funny he kind of assigned himself the older brother/caretaker role in his head despite the fact nimona was older than he is, but i think it's really just because he recognized he had made some progress in his own life and learning to be around people and trust that the world isn't always going to end and that nimona still needed to get there. i started listing her as "pluto" on the cr chart when i bothered doing it because he really ended up feeling a lot of the same protective, familial feelings toward her that he feels toward his actual sister, hazel. hazel's life was also fucking terrible just for being born and she spent the first part of her life before she died being mistreated and nico ended up bringing her back from the underworld like 70-something years after she died because he felt like she didn't belong there and she needed a second chance to prove she was really a good person. and he felt that way about nimona, and he really did strongly believe in the idea that they could rewrite her ending if that's what she really wanted.
it's like...he's always been close to his sisters but i think things were still different with nimona because [hiccup voice] "i looked at her and i saw myself." and the thing is even among the tragedy they were just good kids who could still manage to do silly and fun things and actually have childhood memories and chances to be dumb, normal teenagers. it was a lot of monster kids mistreated by everyone learning what love feels like and being accepted and accepting themselves, and even though he would never say his was as intense as hers i think he did settle in and kind of go "i see you." that was always his primary goal, i think, was to make sure nimona was seen and she wasn't forgotten and the thing that really always pissed him off was whenever she tried to imply she was less important to him than other people. i think if she had actually died he'd just be irrevocably shattered. there would be no coming back from that not only because it would crush him to have to be without her, but because he was so afraid it'd just send her on a spiral that she was right and couldn't change/people weren't worth it and he never wanted her to feel less than safe and loved. i forget which thread, i think it was w6 saturday but the meta was about how both of them are busy trying to keep each other above water and not drown and i think that was especially true after ace and reigen died, because without them, they really only had each other to an extent. they had other trusted friends and adults, but i do think they have a specific way of talking to each other that other people can't mimic, and that includes people like saya and will.
i think i said somewhere in my lore plurk too that especially during all of the stuff with danny w5, if she had told him that yes she did want him to actually stop talking to him he would've. nimona was so important to him and even if he didn't always agree with her or her feelings he always respected them. he actually wrote to reigen and kind of was like "what do i do when my friends are mad but i'm not as mad, is that okay?" and then i found out she did the opposite and went "what do i do when i'm mad but my friends aren't as mad, is that okay" and i hate them? i hate that they're still at their core exactly the same but again that's exactly why they work. he never really expected her to compromise with him, even if he wasn't afraid to argue his point, but more often than not he could see where she was coming from even if it wasn't complete agreement.
this argument friday w6 was also really important for them, i think, because it really kind of hammered in that he could rely on her and he hadn't been fair to her by not letting her try. prior to this, he had only cared about keeping her safe and helping her and he had argued about being too dependent but i think the fact that she called him out really solidified their position as ride or die. he stopped being afraid of showing emotions and thoughts to her (for the most part) and he wanted to try better for her and let her actually see the ugly parts of him the way she'd let him see the ugly parts of her.
honestly if someone asked him about nimona he'd probably just ramble for so, so long about how wonderful she really is because he thinks more than anything the gift of knowing her is that she really did trust him. he gained her trust and he's never taking that for granted, and he's absolutely going to be devastated to be separated from her for a while before remembering that he can just. call her? and go see her??? fucking idiot. she's basically got him for life, and he'll continue to run after her for the rest of his life whether she wants him to or not. she taught him how to be better and helped him work out some of his own issues, and i think above all he loves her unconditionally and always will.
