Were the sponsors not watching what they were sending? [ this seems like a weird oversight thing. ] How did an entire civilian get into the crate without anybody noticing?
Don't ask me. Someone screwed up along the line and nobody is going to fess up to that -- and from what Braids told us, he got into a random crate to travel some random place far from home and ended up with us because of bad luck. We couldn't send him back to safe lands, and he turned out to be a competent mage anyway, so in the end he it was a net gain in some way.
[They'd have died if Reynir hadn't been there -- and if not died, at the very least have a much harder time]
The bridge we used to get to the Silent World crumbled apart after we crossed. The ship to take us all back to land was scheduled to come in a few weeks.
[...more like the crew broke the bridge by accident while passing on it. Not their fault, it was on its last legs -- but she sure won't admit this, hah!
But yeah, the way they got supplies was that a ship unrelated to them got contacted and ordered to give them food, so the ship approached the coast, send them a raft with two crates, and left. No contact nor opportunities to board or send anyone back]
That's where everything used to be before! Where everybody lived. All the towns, the cities, the countries that are now gone...it's all 'the Silent World', beyond the frontiers of the safe areas we all know and love.
[She even is gesturing in the air, like that'll help the explanation]
Leaving the safe places is a bad idea if you want to, you know, stay alive.
If you're unprepared I can see how that would be a problem. [ it sounds pretty rough, actually. ] It doesn't sound as if there are a lot of safe places left either.
There aren't, but it's my job to try to ensure the safe areas can expand, you know? The Swedes are kinda helping by using fire to burn everything to cleanse the threats, but I sure would hate to do it like that. I so prefer face-to-face fighting.
[Except if it involves explosions, explosions are cool in her book]
Of course I know how to fight! I have a pretty mean punch, let me tell you.
[Just ask Hanako, she punched him in the face
WHILE HE WAS IN HIS MONSTER FORM and she didnt know it was hanako good grief I had to edit this because I realized how that sounded before I clarified, haha]
[ honestly he would not have even blinked if she'd said out loud she punched hanako as a child in the face. but he does seem to find the thought a little amusing. ]
I guess that's one way to do it. And you don't have to worry about being without a weapon that way, so it's actually pretty smart. [ he can respect that. ]
So, what about you? Feel confident you can hold your own on a one-on-one fight? If not, I wouldn't mind teaching you a thing or two. Everyone should know that kinda thing.
[ he understands why the offer is being made. there's a wry little grin though. ]
I know a thing or two, yeah. But that's good to know. I think there are a handful of people they brought into this world who have never had to defend themselves before. Some people were talking about how it might not hurt to teach those people a few moves.
Names of...the people I was talking to? Or of the people who might need help? [ he's not sure about providing either list of names because he's also not sure of them, period. ]
[Sigrun already can make guesses, but at the same time some of those have shown her they're not defenseless or have good, useful skills -- and it'll keep happening. There's a very good chance she'd offer such things to someone who already knows how to do it]
Not too sure yet. But it might not be a bad idea to look at the database again. A lot of our profiles list if we know how to fight or not, so it's a good place to start.

Why couldn't you send him back? There just wasn't a way to?

What exactly is the Silent World then?

Face-to-face fighting is a lot faster and effective, so I can't disagree with that either. As long as you actually know how to fight.
