[ have you ever met someone who's in the middle of a grocery store looking like they don't have a clue what they're doing? that's nico. that is nico di angelo currently standing in an aisle in front of a bunch of produce like he's trying to decide what he wants to do with his life. ]
Why are there so many types of applesβ¦
[ this is sort of mumbled to himself, but he's also now at the point he may very well be in the way. sorry ponta. ]
[ Ponta is having a grocery shopping field day here. At home, he has to budget with his meager income and is never capable of buying as much stuff as he wants to try new recipes with. Here, with endless pocket change, paying may be a hassle but it is possible and the options are delightful.
Don't mind how full his basket is looking. It's fine.
He does not mind Nico being in the way. In fact, he'll just answer him as if they'd been in a conversation all along. ]
[ hey man, you do you. he is fine and nonjudgmental about people grabbing a bunch of food. better than him who is standing with his hands in his pockets and a package of oreos tucked under his arm. ]
I didn't know there were two kinds. But why not both? [ normally he might be a little more standoffish, but he at least recognizes ponta as a fox and that makes him Okay. ]
The fun one is that apples can have many different qualities that are desirable depending on what you want to make with it - most people like crisp and sweet apples when just eating them for a snack, but some foods are better suited for mealy or bitter ones. Having a variety brings out the best of the fruits' many possibilities.
[ Spoken like someone who likes cooking maybe a little too much... ]
The unfun one is capitalism. You can trademark breeds of apple so if someone else wants to sell an apple with similar qualities, they better make a whole new genetically distinct variant.
[ this is so detailed and it's clear that he actually was not expecting this answer? it's also clear that he's not necessarily opposed to it, simply listening and slowly nodding along. ]
I think that's way more thought than I've ever put into fruit my entire life. [ there's a half-smile. ] But you really seem to know what you're talking about. Guess I'll take the fun answer, then.
Better late than never. Between you and me I'm really hoping we're done with the unpleasant public events for a while.
[ like not just murder, he would be fine not doing a huge party again anytime soon. two kinds of people. ]
But pleased to meet you. Nico di Angelo, but...I guess you may already know that. [ it was just polite to introduce himself as well. ] Things seem a little less busy so far this week. It doesn't seem like a bad time to get to know some people better.
this is extremely overwhelming, thanks. he's just kind of standing at the entrance with wide eyes, not quite sure where he's supposed to be going from here? he kind of wants to turn around and leave, but he's on a mission.
it also means he's probably in ponta's way, so he turns and suddenly jumps in surprise upon seeing him. ]
Oh, Ponta. Hey. [ ...good start, nico. ] Kind of a huge selection to go through, right?
[ Honestly, Nico? He feels it. Why is there so much stuff here and how is anybody supposed to know the difference between five different types of yellow paint in a tube? (Dimly he's aware that other people would say the same about his collection of baking ingredients but shhh.) ]
You can say that again. I don't even know where to start looking...
Oh, you guys got that one, too? I have no idea how I'm gonna accomplish that one. I have zero artistic talent. [ this may or may not be true. ]
To be honest? I was looking for some things for a present for your leader and I severely underestimated how much stuff exists in an art supplies store. Like. Why are there six different kinds of pencils...? [ but he shakes his head. ]
We may as well look together. It can't be any worse than figuring it out ourselves.
[ By this time of day, Ponta's gotten a little used to the annoying memory phenomenon that is popping up all over. He wonders if it'd be best to mostly spend this week in the dorm in order to keep himself a little more private... but at the same time the idea of being stuck indoors all day is just depressing.
And there's still new locations to check, too. That comes first.
In front of the karaoke place, he runs into Nico and before he can even open his mouth to say hi, a comic book panel pops up. As soon as Ponta sees the boy with dual colored hair, he groans. ]
[ oh. okay. there are so many things happening here and nico's immediately startled by the comic book panel immediately popping up. but as this plays out in front of him and he follows along, he's finding himself with so, so many questions. when he hits the end, he's giving ponta a very, very curious look. ]
I don't know what I want to ask first. What bottle battling is, or who that weirdo was.
[ As far as memories go, this one was... not that bad? His disdainful treatment of Haku is nothing people haven't seen at trial with other people already, so Ponta feels a little less laid bare than he did at other junctures today.
He sighs. ]
Well, he's Haku Kurenai and aside from his two other personalities, this was a pretty good summary of the guy.
[ Saying 'his two other personalities' as if this was nothing, sorry. ]
Bottle battling is... well, it's the sport I used to be champion of, simply put.
[ there's a blank look but he sort of shrugs. okay. so either ponta is being facetious about other personalities, or the guy really does have two of them. nothing he hasn't really seen before. not his business. ]
Seems annoying. [ but he raises an eyebrow. ] "Used to" kind of puts things into context though. ...from before you started over, right?
[ Ponta nods. Yeah, Haku is annoying - or at least he currently thinks so out of deep personal disappointment and hurt. ]
Bingo. Though this memory is from like... a few weeks ago. Circumstance kinda forced me to go back to it for a bit. Hard to watch something horrible happen when you have the chance to stop it, you know?
[ ponta help. it's fine, nico knows nothing and is just going off of first impressions sorry to say. ]
...no, I definitely get that. It's sort of the same for us. I don't know how much Will's told you about home, but half the time we don't even really get a break before another crisis comes up that we have to circumvent. But...it's our job. I don't regret being able to stop things from happening that could hurt people. [ ... ] Are you having luck stopping what you want to stop?
[ after everyone has been deprinnied, nico is on his way back to his own dorm when he sees ponta ahead of him. he's a little too close to block his emotional response which is both equal parts relieved and a healthy sense of trepidation. his hands are in the pocket of his hoodie, and he sort of folds the edges of the jacket over himself to hide his shirt because his instinct is truly "holy shit i am so sorry my boyfriend brutally murdered you on purpose but accidentally. ]
[ SURPRISE, WELCOME BACK TO BEING ALIVE AND DEALING WITH CONSEQUENCES.
apathy's fine though, it's easier to match. ]
We kind of knew everybody would be back by Tuesday, but...it's a much quicker turnaround when you leave on a Friday. [ there's a lopsided smile to that though. ] Really could've done without the experience though, you're right. I can't exactly blame you for trying, but...man.
Yeah... This was a much bigger mess than it was meant to be. I figured nobody in the team would be cool with killing someone outside, so might as well keep our required murder internal.
I didn't know about Will's sideeffect nor the... Man, the puzzle stuff is almost funny if it wasn't so morbid.
[ He heard about that after the fact when Sigrun asked if he'd had a hand in planning it... ]
It didn't help that someone chose to meddle further and try to take over to make sure you guys hit the quota. [ there's a huge stab of annoyance in his vibes, but not at the foxes. ] It makes sense. You guys had the biggest team, too, so it should have been a safe bet.
[ but he sighs at that. ] Will...didn't really want to tell anybody about the backlash considering how dangerous it can be and because he can't help himself when it comes to healing people. Fox set up a room for him in your dorm to try and take out the damage so he wouldn't hurt other people. I didn't even realize he was cursed with puzzles on Thursday because he just...likes doing those on his own sometimes.
[ but it is actually a little funny in hindsight. very, very far in hindsight. ] The trial was a lot of speculation after a while.

[ That emotional cocktail is awkward to feel second-hand, wow. This is what they don't tell you about 'sacrificing yourself' plans!!
On Ponta's end, the emotional state is muted. He's satisfied to be back alive, but well... his feelings are always dull. Apathy's a bitch. ]

[ Will is such a good person that sometimes it really makes one want to shake him. Maybe they should be shaking him more often. Maybe that'd help. ]
I'm kind of glad he didn't confess, at least. That was what I asked of him. I didn't want him to die for this.
